Ayurveda is the system of healing and medicine from ancient India. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda literally means “The Science of Life”, but it can also be translated into many other meanings such as “The Art of Living”, “The Knowledge of Life”
It is a beautiful science and art in which we bring balance into our daily life by getting to know our Self in a higher way. It is a vast, complex system and yet easy to integrate into our modern lives.
Though Ayurveda covers all areas of healing of the Physical body, the Mental body, the Energetic body and the Emotional body, it’s big focus is on prevention and maintenance of these bodies.
We are all made up out of the same elements, respectfully Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth, and yet we all have a different make-up of these Five Elements, which is what makes us all an individual. These five elements create three Bodily Humours known as the Doshas. The three Doshas are Vata (Ether and Air), Pitta (Fire and Water) and Kapha (Water and Earth).
Just as each one of us has a different fingerprint, so do we all have our own individual mental and physical constitution (PRAKRUTI) which we are born with which is either ruled by one or two of the doshas. Our Prakruti is determined by numerous influences such as the Prakruti of our parents, the Vikruti (state of present imbalance) of our parents at the moment of conception, the diet, lifestyle and mind-state of the mother during pregnancy, and our own karma.
By first determining what our constitution is through the pulse, tongue and other means of diagnoses, we can then learn and understand our natural tendencies ‘ We learn what can go out of balance the easiest in our Physical Body as the body will give certain signs and symptoms for us to recognize and also with our Mental Body. We wil see that our Mental Body will react with certain emotions in certain situations as a result of our contsitution and our possible imbalance (VIkruti) and we will learn what we can do to bring ourselves back to balance through the right food choices, lifestyles, house-hold remedies and yoga asana/meditation routine
With today’s world having so many different “instant” diets promising weight-loss and the ultimate health, we must realize that each and every one of us is an individual, so what works for one person may not work for another.
As our external environment changes constantly through changes in the weather, season, physical excercise or lack of, as well as our private life with stress, family situations, work and so , this affects our internal environment of the physical, mental and emotional body and so we continuously need to ajust our lives to remain in balance.
From the moment we begin to live our lives in the manner that suits our Prakruti, we will feel a change. Physically, mentally and in other ways, we experience life with more balance, enabling us to experience life in a fuller way.
